Step 1
Pre-Operative Evaluation & Consultation
During your consultation, our staff will perform a series of tests to ensure that your eyes are healthy, suitable, and stable for laser vision correction. Your eyes will be electronically measured to create an accurate three-dimensional image of your eye’s surface. From these tests, the laser will calculate the treatment that will best correct your refractive error.
Step 2
Flap Creation
A few minutes before the laser treatment, you are given anesthetic eye drops. Next, your eye is prepared for flap creation. The layers of the cornea are separated with unprecedented precision, creating an ultra-thin flap. The flap is separated and folded back creating a hinge to expose the next layer of cornea to be treated.
Step 3
Corneal Creation
Now the curvature of the cornea is reshaped according to the desired refraction. An excimer laser precisely ablates corneal tissue within seconds, to the hundredth of a millimeter. This procedure is performed inside the cornea; the outer, very sensitive layers of the cornea are not touched by the laser. Finally, the flap will be reseated in its original position to cover the treated area. The disturbed epithelial cells start regenerating immediately and will grow back quickly. The whole procedure lasts only a couple of minutes. Immediately after treatment, you can open and close your eye normally.
Step 4
Aftercare
Special eye drops promote healing. During the first few hours after the procedure, you should not rub your eyes. You should also avoid contact sports and hot tubs, saunas, and swimming pools for two weeks. All natural bodies of water; lakes, rivers, and oceans should be avoided for 6-8 weeks. There are no visible traces of the procedure on the eye.
Step 5
Drop Regimen
Please obtain and bring the prescribed drops with you on the day of your procedure. Our staff will verify that the correct medication has been purchased. Taking all of your medicated eyes drops, as directed, will help promote healing and relieve any discomfort.
During the first 24 hours, place 1 drop of Tobradex in the operated eye(s) every 2 hours, while you are awake. Then 1 drop 4 times a day for the next 4 days.
Thera Tears should be taken every 2 hours for 2 months, while you are awake. Then 1 drop 4 times a day for the next 6-8 months.
Drops should be used 5 minutes apart to prevent one from washing out the other.
